Book of the Week
The Finest Hotel in Kabul by Lyse Doucet
In 1969, the luxury Hotel Inter-Continental Kabul opened its doors: a glistening white box, high on a hill, that reflected Afghanistan’s hopes of becoming a modern country, connected to the world. Lyse Doucet first checked into the Inter-Continental on Christmas Eve 1988.
In the decades since, she has witnessed a Soviet evacuation, a devastating civil war, the US invasion, and the rise, fall and rise of the Taliban, all from within its increasingly battered walls. The Inter-Con has never closed its doors. Now, she weaves together the experiences of the Afghans who have kept the hotel running to craft a richly immersive history of their country.
‘Powerful’, ‘charming’, ‘unforgettable’, ‘beautiful’ and ‘utterly compelling’ are just some of the words used to review this brilliant book.

There is no better way to support us than visiting the bookshop in person or getting in touch via phone or email for collection in Biggar.
If you would like to support us online please use our partner Bookshop.org. They have created an online platform that helps independent bookshops across the country by offering an alternative way to shop online while being conscious of a bricks and mortar business. Browse their titles below.

"I have never been in a more perfectly designed bookshop, with a lovely integration of the books themselves and various bold and charming artworks. The books are everywhere, somehow all folded into an incredibly small place, like a ship’s cabin. I did an event there recently and by the end was trying to work out how I could relocate my family to Biggar. It was like being given a brief glimpse of an ideal place and then being cruelly chucked back into London.’
Simon Winder, author of Lotharingia

Browse or order
We love to talk about books, recommend books and appreciate books with anyone interested so don’t hesitate to ask. You will find some of our recommended titles here and many, many more in the shop as well as a very efficient (usually next-day) ordering service.
Bricks and Mortar
We are a proudly bricks-and-mortar high street shop. We believe independent bookshops are a special place to visit and so much of the pleasure of reading is going into a bookshop, having a browse, chatting about exceptional (or not!) books and experiencing the soul and atmosphere of reading.
Events
We work closely with the local community, schools and the library to curate a wide range of interesting and inspiring sessions. We are currently organising a small programme of events for autumn 2025 so be the first to hear about these by signing up to our newsletter, or check out what is coming up soon on the events page.
The beautiful artwork you see is by the talented Fiona Gibson, author, artist and friend.
